A MATTER OF OPINION

April 23rd 2008 00:45
The great thing about sites like orble is that everyone is able to have their say on any subject at all and share things from their perspective. You may not agree, but even an ignorant opinion is an opinion. So it amazes me instead of trying to see a subject from another point of view and giving an intelligent or witty comment back pointing out your views on the matter, people trade insults. Just because a person has a different take on things does not mean they have no right to their opinion, they are not idiots, they just don't agree with you.
I know some people are passionate about certain things, and that's as it should be, passionate people achieve things, but you cannot bully someone into agreeing with you with insults or by putting them down. All it achieves is to show everyone else that can answer in an intelligent manner how truly ignorant and arrogant you are. It's not a great way to get people to listen and think about what you are saying.

If there was only one opinion on everything then wouldn't that make us all communist's. We live in a democracy, everyone should be able to speak freely without worrying about being called names or being ridiculed. To do this makes you nothing more than a bully !!!

I agree and disagree. A diversity of opinions, even stupid ones, is a good thing. My only qualm is with your saying that people should not suffer abuse or ridicule for speaking freely - sadly, abuse and ridicule are part of free speech. Of course, your approach is sensible - criticism of bullies rather than attempts to censor them.
Good post,
A. Hine

What about neo-nazis and the kkk? What about child abusers? What about wife-bashers? What about people who murder doctors that perform abortions? What about people who kill other people with cars and then say it's not their fault because they were drunk?

Is it OK to abuse them?

Sometimes, we can all agree when it's OK to abuse people for their beliefs.

Other times, we can't.

Frankly, some points of view, I don't want to try and understand...and if that measn people stop listening to me, it's a risk I'm willing to take!

Yes your right, I was really just talking about people who use abuse on line to try and make their point instead of just discussing the differences. It was a way of getting my point across, of course there are people like you mentioned who lose the right to be heard

yes some people are very quick to resort to name calling . . . its not constructive, it doesnt get your point across, and its usually just done to deter from the fact that the person cant articulate their ideas consistently

and some people obviously have double-standards when it comes to how they speak to others and how they would like to be spoken to
