A VERY BIASED REVIEW.......THE VELVET SET
May 30th 2009 10:37
I ventured into Sydney last night with all my cronies as we braved the rain, the hoons and the drunks. As we fought for a parking space, invaded the "trendy" hotels while being studied like fossils by all the young things, and then lined up in the rain to be admitted into the Gaelic Club we didn't loose our focus. We were not fazed by all these challenges before us because we knew at the end of it was our reward, a night with THE VELVET SET.
Who is this band you ask? Only the best, the classiest, the most sublime swing band ever.
And what a night it was. Three hours of watching swing dancers dressed in retro fashion swing their thing to the sounds of some of the best jazz and swing music ever. A brilliant line up of ten musicians and singers and a venue full of atmosphere and enjoyment. And a little Burlesque and fan dancing in between sets made for an unusual and entertaining night.
But I am biased, I admit it. Not because I am middle aged and I get palpitations from heavy metal or rock, not because I don't get out much, but because the singer in the band is my handsome, talented, beautiful son. There is nothing like standing among an audience and hearing the girls around you exclaim with excitement "he's hot" or hearing a crowd yell for more at the end of the show.
And for the men jiving around the joint there is the lovely Miss Sarah, the other singer who makes my son look so fine. She of the husky sexy voice and immaculate clothes. The two of them together are playful and their recreation of the old standards is amazing.
The man of impeccable taste who put this band together is Mr Graham Coupland, he has done such a good job of coordinating the events and looking after the other members of the band. He has put together , in my humble opinion, the best of the best and come up with something a little different for those out there who need something different than the usual drunken night out with the boys, and for those of us who just love good music. So thank you Graham, for picking my boy to be in your wonderful band.
The next gig in Sydney is THE GANGSTERS BALL on the 5th of september at The Metro Theatre. If you have ever dreamed of dressing up and going back in time, get along to this gig. Last years ball was a big hit, a night of swing dancing, corsets, burlesque and last but not least, fantastic music.
