CAN TV BREAK YOUR HEART?

April 23rd 2008 08:06
Yes, it can if the documentary I watched last night is any indication. Late last night a documentary about the world's tallest woman came on. Thinking to myself "this sounds interesting" I sat down to watch what became one of the saddest stories I have ever seen. There is a young woman in China who when last measured was 7ft 8inches (sorry if it's not metric but this is how they described her) and she is a very gentle soul. Her elderly mother looks after her and her brother stays by her side and tries his hardest to support her and get her some help. Unfortunately in China if you are just a poor farmer and have no money you go without medication and treatment. This gigantic young woman with the gentle smile lies in bed because she cannot walk anymore and watches life go on around her but cannot participate. In fact from what the documentary said about her life so far she has either been exploited or ignored. I like to have a good whine about everything that is wrong in Australia at the moment, but I hope we never get to the stage where a young person has a brain tumor that causes so much misery, and the person who has it just lays around in pain waiting to die because they can't afford treatment. We are very lucky we were born here.

oh i saw part of this, i felt very sorry for her, the tumour had caused hormones to malfunction and she couldnt bear children either . . . whenever i see any program or film depicting the poverty stricken in any other country (including america) i am extremely grateful to be in australia where we have access to welfare and health care . . . our system isnt perfect but im glad im here

What a sad story. We are very lucky to be living in Australia.

I can't even imagine what it would be like. China can still be so old-fashioned in their views about women. A poor farmer girl who is ill and exceptionally tall? Not the best combination in any one's language, but probably especially so in China.
