How do you solve a big problem if you bury your head in the sand and deny that it exists? The front page of the local newspaper this week has a big headline "STANDING PROUD", and it goes on to tell us all how enraged the Major is because somebody dared to point out the numerous problems in his city. Well as a person who has resided in this place for many years I can tell him the problems exist and he is a fool to deny them. I live in the western suburbs of Sydney and I see these problems every day as do most of the other people who live here. We have high crime rates, we have high unemployment, we have large numbers of uneducated people, we have a big problem with socially disadvantaged people and many other problems that are a result of all these things combined.
It amazes me that politicians and other leaders of the community spend a lot of time talking a place up when their time would be better spent trying to come up with solutions to some of these problems. If they are ignored the problems can only get worse, and there is no easy answers, but surely these are the people who need to get off their bums and come up with a few solutions instead of getting their faces on the front pages of a newspaper denying the truth !!
If they are so easily offended then maybe they should look for a different job. We can'tfix things up if no-one aknowledges they exist.
There are now a lot of little pockets of Sydney that have major crime problems, major drug problems and people that make life a misery for the ordinary person just trying to live a quiet life and bring up his family. But as long as we have idiot Mayors and politicians telling everyone within earshot that these problems don't exist, things will stay the same. Maybe they live in areas with a white picket fence and everyone is sweet, but the majority don't and they are paid to look after us, not themselves !!
