IN THE BEGINNING THERE WAS BOWIE

After reading a blog about about the best music video's and leaving my comments I did some thinking (this doesn't come easy to me) about the beginnings of music videos..
There was a time, believe it or not, that music was only heard not seen, not unless you went along to a live performance. I have vague memories of the first music clips made in the 60's, they were not very exciting, they did not have a mega budget, they were just about the music. But....if it wasn't for these modest efforts people would not be enjoying the overbudgeted mini movies they see on thier screens now.
One of the first clips I remember was by THE KINKS ( brilliant band in my humble opinion). I remember seeing it for the first time and the pleasure it brought me. It may be a very rough compared to the clips now but clips like these started the ball rolling.
The 70's saw more sophisticated clips, still very raw compared to todays clips but there were a couple of artists that astounded me. I thought then and I still do that these two were ahead of thier time. One is the wonderful KATE BUSH, who was like nothing any of us had ever seen or heard before. I still sit and watch these clips, she was brilliant.
And my other pick for the artist that would lead the way in imagination and innovation would have to be DAVID BOWIE.. He was, and still is amazing. I could not tear myself away from watching him, he was wierd, talented and compelling. Two clips of his that I love are "John I'm only dancing" simply because it was so strange.
And the other would have to "Life on mars"...incredible song
Talking heads was another favourite of mine but the band I think maybe showed how amazing a music clip could be was THE CURE
My last pick would have to be PULP with "common people". Another great band and another great clip
Well that's my picks, I would be very interested to see some of yours.
