THE INVISIBLES
April 19th 2009 09:12
About a year ago I stood behind a young woman and her mother while waiting to be served in a shop and for some reason the young woman really touched my heart. She was probably in her twenties but I couldn't really tell because she wouldn't lift her face up. Her hair was beautiful, waist length and glossy but even that was hanging across her hidden face. Her shoulders were slumped, her dress was far too big and she had an oversize cardigan over the dress and she seemed to me like she just wanted to disappear.
I ended up writing a blog about her that night because I just couldn't get her out of my mind. I wondered how many other people walk the streets and nobody sees them, because they are a bit different, because they aren't pretty or outgoing.......The Invisibles.
This week saw another invisible prick my conscious, Susan Boyle. there has been so much said about this very ordinary, but very talented woman this week but I wondered, why has it taken people 47 years to notice her? Last year the same thing happened with a man by the name of Paul Potts, these people have wonderful gifts to offer us all, maybe it's time to start taking notice. How many others inhabit this world but are treated like they don't exist? How many shy, bullied, ordinary or eccentric people have wonderful things to offer us but we will never know because we do not acknowledge them, or take the time to get to know them?
When I was young there was a song I loved called "Angie Baby" about an eccentric woman who lived in her own world, and that's the name I have always thought of when I think about the woman who would not lift her face. This is a verse from the song:
You live your life in the songs you hear
On the rock and roll radio
And when a young girl doesn't have any friends
That's a really nice place to go
Folks hoping you'd turn out cool
But they had to take you outta school
You're a little touched you know, Angie Baby
I wonder how many years it will take before we learn that underneath the exterior of a human being could be something wonderful that will lift our hearts.

I know what you mean about being tall, I am quite tall myself but I am glad because being a big person I need the hieght. As far as blending into the background, well thats good too sometimes, but the difference between you, me and these people is they are ignored and it would be nice to draw them out and treat them like part of the human race.
