TRASH CASH AND FLASH
April 5th 2008 13:03
let me take you on a little trip to the past, the 70's in fact. It was one long party, well for me at least. There was so much going on and so much to do, and so many, many choices. I went through my teens and into my early twenties in the 70's and all I remember is fun and more fun. The diversity in music was astounding. Now to young people the whole disco thing may seem really trashy but if you were there trashy was fantastic. I don't remember the weekdays, just the weekends and we all waited for Friday so we could just dance for the next 48 hours.
I loved getting on the dance floor and letting loose to the sounds of Donna Summer or doing the hustle with a group of people I had never met.
Much to the horror of my parents I would buy the biggest platform shoes I could buy and risk breaking an ankle every time I took to the dancefloor.
The car to be seen in was as I remember a Monaro and when my friend went out and bought one we thought she was the coolest person we had ever met, and of course she had the perfect farrah hairdo as well !!
For those of us who had horrible curly hair the perfect solution was to have an afro, us white girls looked ridiculous
My favourite TV show was Soul Train, you have never really witnessed dancing unless you have watched a bit of Soul Train
And in our decade we were privilged to have great band and artists doing some of the best work of their careers. There was the wondeful Marvin Gaye's "What's Going On", Elton John's Goodbye Yellowbrick Road, Led Zepplin, the wierd and wonderful Grace Jones, A brilliant album by Boz Scaggs, Tapestry by Carol King, Smoke on the water by DeepPurple and so many more. I just loved T. Rex, fronted by the strange beautiful liitle man Marc Bolan. He marched to his own beat and you either loved him or hated him I think.
Then there was the beginnings of punk rock with The Sex Pistols and The Ramones. Great pop bands like Blondie and heartthrobs to all us girls like David Essex who sang Rock on. I went to his concert and don't remember any of it because I was so enthralled by his good looks !!
And of course The Clash, one of the best bands of that era I think. But my two favourites of all these artists was one I have already mentioned, Marvin Gaye and the one and only David Bowie. I had never seen anything like him when he first appeared in all his makeup and feminine clothes, he was the prettiest man I had ever seen. And his music was a story to be listened to, each album a different character, his imagination was unbelievable. And so I will leave you with a video of what i think is one of his best songs ever "life on Mars". I hope you enjoyed my recollection of all things 70's, there is so, so much more but It's too much to fit into one blog.
